Español ASOCIACIÓN TIKAL
The Tikal Association is a non-profit corporation, which was
established in Guatemala City in 1966. Its goals are to promote and collaborate in the protection and conservation of the pre-Columbian
and historical heritage of
Guatemala, as well as its ongoing
traditions. It seeks to spread the knowledge of this cultural wealth through publications, conferences, visits to archaeological and historic places and diverse cultural activities. It
works to create scholarship programs and investigations in anthropology including archaeology and
ethnology. It also works to found and develop museums and similar institutions.
Activities
Since its foundation, the Association Tikal has collaborated with the Institute of Anthropology and History and the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in a number of programs:
- In saving and protecting stelae and monuments in the Department of The Petén since 1970.
- Aid and improvements to regional museums.
- Collaboration with the Project Abaj Takalik in El Asintal, Retalhuleu, since 1987.
- Partnership with the Project of la Costa Sur in Escuintla.
- Collaboration on two projects: “Quiriguá, Izabal” with the University of
Pennsylvania and of
“Río Azul, Petén”, with the University of Texas, in San Antonio.
- Organization and development of the I Simposio World of Epigrafía Maya in 1986.
- Organization of the Simposios of Archaeological Investigations in Guatemala, organized by the National Museum of Arqueología and Etnología, since 1987 to the date are carry out annually the third week of July of each year.
- Management of the funding of donations for institutions such as the National Museum of
Archeology and Ethnology and the Institute of Anthropology and History of Guatemala.
- Program of “Assistance for Scientific Investigations” offered for specific jobs in
archaeology – especially to students.
Publications
The Association Tikal publishes editions of the Guide to Tikal by William R. Coe, University of Pennsylvania in English, Spanish, German and French. In 1988 the edition was revised in English and Spanish.
The Fowls of Tikal by Frank B. Smithe in Spanish and English versions.
Co-publication of books and pamphlets with Editorial Piedra Santa.
Co-sponsorship the publication of The Project Balberta; The Transition among the Terminal Formative and the Early Classic in the Peaceful Coast of Guatemala, Pittsburgh University, Department of Anthropology.
Annual publication of the Memorias del Simposio de Investigaciones Arqueológicas en Guatemala
Revista Utz'ib is published twice to the year since 1991. This magazine presents results of recent investigations in Guatemala.
The Utz´ib Series Reports has been published annually since 2000, publishes original works regarding about the archaeological investigations of Guatemala.
Library
The Library specializes in Archeology and Ethnology and may be consulted by the associates and students in our headquarters.
Funds
The funding of the Association Tikal comes from the dues of the associates,
from conferences, excursions and other events, from the exclusive distribution of the Guide of Tikal and
other publications, and from national and international donations.
The cultural patrimony of Guatemala is a marvelous inheritance that belongs to our children and to the
coming generations. We should be vigilant as to its protection and conservation.
The annual dues are Q 125.00 per person.
